Structured business plan templates with executive summary, market analysis, marketing, operations and financial projection sections, ready for investors or banks.
Write the plan for a particular reader
A business plan for the owner needs to explain the decisions and work ahead. A plan prepared for a funding discussion also needs to show how the proposal and the supporting figures connect. Begin with the customer, the problem being addressed and the offer. Describe the evidence available for demand and identify assumptions that have not yet been tested. Avoid writing a confident sales forecast simply because the template has an empty space for one.
Connect sales assumptions to operations
Describe how customers will find the business, what they will buy and how the business will deliver it. Then connect the proposed sales activity with staffing, supplier capacity, premises, equipment and lead times. Include the people who own important milestones. A plan becomes easier to review when it explains what must happen before launch and what would need to change if demand, prices or delivery costs differ from the initial assumptions.
Use the startup budget as a supporting schedule
Enter each startup cost as a separate item with an estimated quantity and unit cost. The workbook calculates the line amount and the total of completed lines. Keep the currency and period explicit. Distinguish purchases made before opening from the working cash needed after opening, and keep estimates separate from quotes or commitments. Where one cost is a deposit or a refundable amount, explain that in the notes rather than treating every line as the same kind of expense.
Review the plan as information improves
Add a source or evidence reference next to important assumptions: a supplier quote, a customer interview, a trial result or an agreed lease term. Record the date so that old information can be recognised. Before circulating the plan, check that the offer, operating requirements and financial schedules describe the same proposed business. Keep a list of unanswered questions and update the plan when those questions are resolved, rather than filling gaps with unsupported claims.
Working with the editable files
Small Business Plan Outline is the Word option for this task. Start by completing business offer and customer problem and target customer and evidence. Replace the remaining bracketed prompts with information that applies to your situation, and remove unused fields before sharing a finished copy. Keep an untouched master so you can prepare the next document without carrying over another person's details.
Business Startup Cost Budget is an Excel workbook with editable entry areas. Enter the period or project reference first, then complete the rows that apply to your work. Keep figures in the stated units and currency. Where a calculated column is included, change the input cells rather than typing over the formula. Save a separate completed copy and check the print area if you add more rows.
